You've just registered your domain name — congratulations, that's the first building block. And since then, two things have happened: your inbox is flooded with offers of every kind… and when you type in your address, nothing happens. That's normal: a domain on its own isn't a website yet. Here are the real steps, in order, without getting ripped off.
A domain is not yet a website
To keep it simple, you need three distinct things:
- The domain name — your address (e.g. yourcompany.com). That's what you've just bought.
- The hosting — the "plot of land" where the site's files live, accessible 24/7.
- The website — the pages, the design and the content: the "building" your visitors see.
Having the domain without the rest is like owning an address with no house built on it: people can come by all they want, there's nothing to see.
Why your inbox suddenly explodes
It's no coincidence. When you register a domain, its creation becomes public information (for .fr domains, AFNIC publishes the list of new domains every day). Prospectors — website creation, SEO, social media — monitor it and send emails in bulk.
Most of them are automated cold outreach. Be wary of messages with a pushy "click here", artificial urgency or a vague sender. A genuine local business introduces itself clearly, lets you verify who it is, and doesn't put pressure on you.
The real steps after the purchase
- 1. Clarify the purpose of the site: showcase (present yourself and be contacted), online shop, blog… Most tradespeople and shops need a showcase website.
- 2. Choose the hosting — or an all-inclusive plan that includes it, so you have nothing to manage.
- 3. Build the site: this is the key step (see the 3 ways below).
- 4. Connect everything: we link the domain to the hosting and install the SSL certificate (the https padlock).
- 5. Lay the SEO foundations to show up on Google (titles, structure, loading speed).
- 6. Create a professional email address (e.g. contact@yourcompany.com) — far more credible than a gmail address.
The 3 ways to build the site
- Do it yourself (Wix, Squarespace…): cheap, but it takes time and skills — and the domain name is often billed on top.
- Go through an agency: bespoke, but often €1,000 to €3,000 to create, plus the maintenance afterwards.
- A turnkey subscription plan: €0 to create, an all-inclusive monthly fee, and someone who takes care of everything for you.
What if I bought the domain elsewhere?
No problem at all. Whether your domain is with Squarespace, OVH, Gandi or another provider, we can reuse it: all it takes is pointing it to your new site (we guide you step by step, or we handle it). No need to buy anything again.
The important thing is not to let your domain "sleep". Every week without a site means customers typing in your name, finding nothing, and going elsewhere.
